Transport
Transport is the sector encompassing the movement of people, goods and materials by road, rail, air, sea and pipeline. It forms a critical component of economic infrastructure, enabling trade, commerce and access to markets across local, regional and international networks. The sector includes freight and logistics services, public and private passenger transport, warehousing and distribution facilities, as well as the infrastructure required to support these activities such as ports, airports, railway lines and road networks. In South Africa, transport plays a vital role in connecting mining and manufacturing centres to export terminals and domestic markets, with bulk commodities such as coal and iron ore heavily reliant on rail and port capacity. The sector is a significant employer and contributor to GDP, supporting supply chains across agriculture, mining, manufacturing and retail. Key challenges include infrastructure maintenance and expansion, regulatory frameworks, competition policy and the integration of emerging technologies such as intelligent transport systems. Transport policy intersects with energy, environmental and spatial planning considerations, particularly in the context of urban congestion, emissions reduction and rural accessibility. The sector is served by both state-owned enterprises, including rail and port operators, and a diverse private sector ranging from large logistics groups to small and medium-sized road hauliers. Investment in transport infrastructure is closely linked to broader economic development and job creation objectives.
