Transnet
Transnet is South Africa's state-owned freight transport and logistics company, operating as a public enterprise under the Department of Public Enterprises. The organisation manages and integrates the country's rail, port and pipeline infrastructure, playing a critical role in facilitating domestic and export trade. Transnet comprises several operating divisions, including Transnet Freight Rail, which operates the national rail freight network; Transnet National Ports Authority, which manages the country's commercial ports; Transnet Port Terminals, which provides cargo-handling services; and Transnet Pipelines, which transports petroleum products. The company is one of the largest and most capital-intensive of South Africa's state-owned enterprises, with operations spanning the entire logistics value chain. Transnet's rail and port infrastructure is essential for the movement of bulk commodities such as coal, iron ore and manganese, as well as containerised cargo and automotive exports. The organisation has faced operational and financial challenges in recent years, including ageing infrastructure, underinvestment, governance issues and declining performance metrics. National Treasury and the Department of Transport exercise oversight over Transnet's strategic direction and capital allocation. Transnet was established in 1990 as a limited company, succeeding the South African Transport Services, and has since undergone several restructurings to improve efficiency and commercial viability.
