Deepening Democracy through Access to Information

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga is a province in north-eastern South Africa. The capital is Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit). The province is one of the country's most important economic regions, driven by coal mining, power generation, agriculture and forestry. Mpumalanga is home to much of South Africa's coal reserves and hosts numerous coal-fired power stations that supply the national grid. The province also contains significant deposits of gold, platinum-group metals and other minerals, making mining a cornerstone of its economy. Major cities include Mbombela, Emalahleni (formerly Witbank) and Secunda. The province borders Limpopo to the north, Gauteng to the west, the Free State to the south-west, and KwaZulu-Natal to the south, as well as Eswatini and Mozambique to the east. Mpumalanga's eastern escarpment is a major tourist destination, featuring the Kruger National Park, the Blyde River Canyon and the Panorama Route. The province's name means 'place where the sun rises' in several Nguni languages. Mpumalanga was established in 1994 following South Africa's transition to democracy, formed from the former Eastern Transvaal.
