Mozambique
Mozambique is a country in south-eastern Africa, bordered by Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the north-west, Zimbabwe to the west, Eswatini and South Africa to the south-west, and the Indian Ocean to the east. The capital and largest city is Maputo, located in the south. Mozambique has a population of about 32 million and an economy heavily reliant on agriculture, extractive industries and services. The country is rich in natural resources, including coal, natural gas, titanium and hydroelectric potential, with major gas discoveries in the Rovuma Basin attracting significant foreign investment. Mozambique's currency is the metical. The country gained independence from Portugal in 1975 and was governed by the Frelimo party, which initially adopted a socialist orientation. A protracted civil war between Frelimo and Renamo lasted from 1977 to 1992, causing widespread devastation and displacement. Since the peace accord, Mozambique has pursued market-oriented economic reforms and multiparty democracy, though it faces challenges including poverty, inequality, corruption and periodic political instability. The country is a member of the Southern African Development Community, the African Union and the Commonwealth of Nations. Mozambique's strategic location and natural resources position it as an important player in regional energy and trade networks.
