ANC expresses confidence in IEC as it hits candidate list snag at deadline

The ANC has reaffirmed its “full confidence” in the IEC and the “overarching integrity” of South Africa’s electoral process ahead of the upcoming local government elections scheduled for November 4.

ANC National Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu announced that the party has successfully lodged the overwhelming majority of its candidate list within the official nomination deadline, which closed on Friday.

However, on the final day of submission, the IEC’s candidate-capture system experienced technical issues that impacted several contesting political parties.

As a result, a small number of the ANC's entries are currently being finalised in coordination with the Commission.

Bhengu stressed that this was a technical and administrative matter, that is being handled through the Commission's established processes, adding that the party is confident these outstanding entries will be resolved.

The ANC commended the IEC for its “constructive engagement” with all affected political parties.

MVC takes aim at ‘incomplete’ political donor records

The latest political funding disclosure has sparked intense debate over the true meaning of transparency in South Africa’s politics, with civil society organisation My Vote Counts warning that current laws are leaving voters in the dark about who controls the cash.

Ahead of the upcoming local government elections, political parties declared a combined R116.8-million in private donations for the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year.

The DA single-handedly drove the quarter's funding boom, accounting for about R104-million, nearly 89% of the total declared across all parties.

MVC is questioning whether the country’s political funding framework adequately accounts for connected entities and common beneficial ownership when assessing the concentration of political influence.

MVC also expressed concern over individual donors appearing in the Electoral Commission of South Africa records with incomplete names or only initials.

And, Mozambique's President appoints new central bank governor, deputy

Mozambique President Daniel Francisco Chapo has appointed Waldemar Fernando de Sousa as Governor of the Bank of Mozambique and Felisberto Dinis Navalha as Deputy Governor.

De Sousa replaces Rogerio Zandamela, who served as the governor of the Bank of Mozambique from August 2016 until August this year.

As governor, de Sousa will chair the central bank's board of directors, represent the institution before the government and domestic and international bodies, and oversee the bank's senior management and activities.

Navalha, as deputy governor, will serve on the board of directors and will stand in for the governor in cases of absence or incapacity, while carrying out duties assigned or delegated under the law.

The Bank of Mozambique is responsible for key functions related to monetary and financial stability, including conducting monetary and exchange-rate policy, managing the country's foreign assets and supervising financial institutions.
