Inkatha Freedom Party
The Inkatha Freedom Party is a South African political party founded in 1975 by Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Originally established as a Zulu cultural liberation movement, it transformed into a political party ahead of South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994. The party has historically drawn its support base primarily from Zulu-speaking communities in KwaZulu-Natal province, where it has maintained a significant regional presence. During the apartheid era and the transition to democracy, the IFP was involved in violent clashes with the African National Congress, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal and on the Witwatersrand. The party advocates for federalism, traditional leadership structures and free-market economic policies. In the 1994 elections, the IFP secured enough votes to become the third-largest party in Parliament and entered into a coalition government with the ANC. Its electoral support has declined steadily since the mid-1990s, though it has remained an important player in KwaZulu-Natal politics. The party has participated in various coalition arrangements at provincial and local government level. Buthelezi led the party from its inception until 2019, when he was succeeded by new leadership. The IFP continues to contest national, provincial and municipal elections and maintains representation in Parliament and several provincial legislatures.
