Ghana
Ghana is a West African country bordered by Côte d'Ivoire to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The capital is Accra, a major economic and administrative hub on the Gulf of Guinea coast. With a population of about 33-million, Ghana operates as a constitutional democracy and is widely regarded as one of Africa's most stable political environments. The economy is diversified across agriculture, mining, oil and gas, and services, with cocoa, gold and oil forming the backbone of export revenues. Ghana is Africa's leading gold producer and one of the world's top ten, with a mining sector that attracts significant multinational investment from companies such as Newmont, AngloGold Ashanti and Gold Fields. The country's currency is the cedi, managed by the Bank of Ghana. Ghana is a member of the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union and the Commonwealth. Key economic sectors include agriculture, which employs a large share of the workforce, and a growing services industry encompassing finance, telecommunications and technology. Oil production, which began commercially in 2010, has added a new dimension to the economy, though gold remains the dominant mineral export. The government has prioritised infrastructure development, industrialisation and skills development as part of its long-term economic strategy. Ghana gained independence from Britain in 1957, becoming the first sub-Saharan African nation to do so, and has since maintained a reputation for democratic governance and relative economic openness.
