Amnesty International
Amnesty International is a global nongovernmental organisation focused on human rights research, advocacy and campaigning. Founded in London in 1961, the organisation operates in more than 150 countries and territories, with a membership and supporter base of over ten-million people. Its mandate centres on investigating and exposing human rights abuses, mobilising public pressure on governments and other actors, and campaigning for justice and accountability. The organisation works on issues including freedom of expression, the death penalty, torture, political imprisonment, refugee rights and corporate accountability. Amnesty International is funded primarily by individual donations and does not accept government funding for its research and advocacy work, maintaining independence from political and economic interests. The organisation publishes annual reports on the state of human rights worldwide and issues urgent action alerts to mobilise rapid responses to emerging crises. It was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 for its work defending human dignity. Amnesty International's research and reporting frequently inform international policy debates and legal proceedings, and its campaigns have contributed to the release of thousands of prisoners of conscience and changes in national and international law.
