Deepening Democracy through Access to Information

Vaal University Of Technology

Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is a public higher-education institution based in Vanderbijlpark, in the Gauteng province of South Africa. It offers vocationally oriented diplomas, degrees and postgraduate qualifications, with a focus on engineering, information technology, applied sciences, management sciences and human sciences. VUT operates under South Africa's university of technology framework, which emphasises practical, industry-linked training and applied research alongside traditional academic study. The institution serves students from the Vaal Triangle region and beyond, and maintains partnerships with industry to support work-integrated learning and skills development. It runs incubation and entrepreneurship programmes aimed at fostering innovation among students and graduates, including initiatives touching on e-commerce and digital skills. VUT is one of several universities of technology in South Africa, alongside institutions such as Tshwane University of Technology and Durban University of Technology, that emerged from the former technikon system. It is governed by a council and led by a vice-chancellor, and falls under the oversight of South Africa's Department of Higher Education and Training. The university has expanded its programme offerings over time to respond to changing labour-market needs, including growing demand for digital and technology-related skills. VUT features periodically in coverage of skills development and youth employability initiatives in South Africa.
