Uber
Uber is a global technology company that operates a ride-hailing platform connecting passengers with drivers through a mobile application. Headquartered in San Francisco, California, the company operates in more than 70 countries and approximately 10 500 cities worldwide. Uber is publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol UBER. The platform allows users to request rides, track drivers in real time and pay electronically, disrupting traditional taxi and transportation services. Beyond ride-hailing, Uber has expanded into food delivery through Uber Eats, freight logistics through Uber Freight and micro-mobility services including electric bikes and scooters. The company generates revenue by taking a commission from each transaction between riders and drivers, typically ranging from 20% to 30% depending on the market. Uber employs thousands of corporate staff globally, while millions of drivers operate as independent contractors on its platform. In South Africa, Uber launched in 2013 and has become a significant player in the urban transportation market, operating in major cities including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria. The company was founded in 2009 by Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp, initially as UberCab in San Francisco, and has since grown into one of the world's most valuable technology companies despite ongoing debates about driver classification, regulatory compliance and profitability.
