Roodepoort
Roodepoort is a city in Gauteng province, South Africa, situated on the western edge of the Johannesburg metropolitan area. It forms part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality and lies approximately 15 km west of Johannesburg's central business district. The city has a population of several hundred thousand residents and serves as an important industrial and residential hub within the greater Johannesburg conurbation. Roodepoort's economy has historically been anchored by gold mining, with the area sitting on the western extension of the Witwatersrand gold reef, one of the world's richest gold-bearing geological formations. The city's name derives from the Afrikaans words for "red pass", referring to the red soil characteristic of the area. Over the decades, Roodepoort has diversified beyond its mining heritage to include manufacturing, retail and service industries, though mining activity and related businesses remain economically significant. The city is well connected by road and rail infrastructure, linking it to Johannesburg, Pretoria and other major centres in Gauteng. Roodepoort was established in the late nineteenth century during the Witwatersrand gold rush and was formally proclaimed a municipality in 1904, later gaining city status before being incorporated into the unified City of Johannesburg in 2000.
