National Union Of Metalworkers Of South Africa
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is a trade union representing workers in the metals, engineering, automotive and related manufacturing sectors. It is one of the largest and most influential trade unions in South Africa, with a membership base spanning steel, metalworking, vehicle assembly and allied industries. Numsa's mandate includes negotiating wages and conditions of employment, representing workers in disputes, and advocating for policies affecting industrial employment and reindustrialisation. It operates countrywide, with strong representation in industrial hubs such as Ekurhuleni, and engages employer bodies including Seifsa in collective bargaining processes, often through structures such as the Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council. The union is led by elected office-bearers and has historically taken outspoken positions on economic policy, loadshedding's effect on manufacturing, and government industrial strategy. Numsa has frequently engaged with government figures, including the Presidency and relevant ministers, on matters affecting the metals and engineering sector. It was previously affiliated to the Congress of South African Trade Unions before disaffiliating in 2014 amid political disagreements. Numsa has since pursued an independent political and industrial agenda, including involvement in forming workers' political movements. The union remains a key stakeholder in wage negotiations and policy debates affecting South Africa's manufacturing and metals industries.
