Deepening Democracy through Access to Information

Michael Beaumont

Michael Beaumont is a South African politician and the national chairperson of ActionSA, a political party he helped establish in 2020. He serves as a key strategist and organisational leader within the party, working alongside founder Herman Mashaba to position ActionSA as an alternative to the African National Congress and Democratic Alliance in South African politics. Beaumont previously served as chief of staff to Mashaba during his tenure as mayor of Johannesburg from 2016 to 2019, where he gained experience in municipal governance and coalition politics. Before entering politics, he worked in the private sector and developed expertise in business strategy and operations. As national chairperson, Beaumont oversees ActionSA's organisational structure, policy development and electoral strategy, playing a central role in the party's expansion across South African municipalities. He recurs in coverage of ActionSA's campaigns, coalition negotiations and policy positions on issues including service delivery, corruption and economic reform. Beaumont has been particularly vocal on municipal governance failures and the need for accountability in local government. His leadership has been instrumental in ActionSA's growth from a Johannesburg-focused movement to a party contesting elections nationally and in multiple metropolitan areas. He represents a generation of South African political figures who entered public life through civil society and private-sector backgrounds rather than traditional party structures.
