The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is a provincial government department responsible for the planning, development, management and regulation of roads and public transport infrastructure and services in Gauteng province, South Africa. The department's mandate encompasses the construction and maintenance of provincial roads, the regulation of public transport operators, traffic management, road safety programmes and the promotion of integrated transport planning across the province. It oversees the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project and other major road infrastructure initiatives, working to address congestion and improve mobility in South Africa's most economically significant province. The department also administers licensing services, manages scholar transport programmes and coordinates with municipalities on transport matters. It plays a central role in implementing the Gauteng government's broader economic and spatial development strategies, given the province's status as the country's industrial and commercial heartland. The department works closely with national entities such as the South African National Roads Agency Limited and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa to ensure integrated transport networks. Its activities are critical to supporting the movement of goods and people in a province that generates approximately one-third of South Africa's gross domestic product. The department is headed by a member of the executive council (MEC) appointed by the Gauteng premier and operates through regional offices across the province's municipalities, including the West Rand, Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng districts.
