Fundile Gade
Fundile Gade is the MEC for Education in South Africa's Eastern Cape province. In this role he oversees the province's public schooling system, including matric results, school infrastructure projects and teacher discipline. He has commented on improving matric pass rates, including the Eastern Cape's record 84.98% pass rate for the Class of 2024, and on the province's strong performance in mathematics and physical science. Gade has presided over school infrastructure handovers, such as the R52-million Sitoza Senior Secondary School in Ngcobo, and has backed public-private education partnerships, including the Vodacom Foundation's Schools of Excellence programme. His department has faced scrutiny over educator misconduct, including suspensions of teachers accused of sexual offences and financial misconduct, and over school safety following shooting incidents targeting principals. He has been criticised by opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance, for attributing declining results to these suspensions rather than to departmental delays in acting on misconduct allegations. Gade was also named, alongside EFF leader Julius Malema and ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, in a criminal complaint brought by AfriForum's Private Prosecution Unit over allegations that a Bergview College school principal was falsely accused of rape, a case in which the National Prosecuting Authority has pursued prosecution against Malema and Mbalula.
