Faith Mazibuko
Faith Mazibuko is a South African politician serving as Gauteng's MEC for Health and Wellness, appointed by Premier Panyaza Lesufi in April 2026 to replace Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko. She previously served as Gauteng MEC for Social Development, and earlier held portfolios including Infrastructure Development, Community Safety, Agriculture, and Sports in the Gauteng provincial government. As Health MEC she oversees a department with a budget of about R70 billion, and has faced opposition criticism, mainly from the Democratic Alliance and ActionSA, over staffing shortages, unpaid service providers, procurement centralisation under acting Head of Department Dr Darion Barclay, delayed surgeries, unvetted childcare staff, and weak consequence management against officials implicated in medical negligence and financial misconduct. In her earlier role at Social Development she faced scrutiny over the Tswa Daar anti-substance abuse campaign and overcrowding at the Dr Fabian and Florence Ribeiro Treatment Centre, as well as reported elderly abuse cases in care facilities. She has previously attracted controversy for public remarks, including a 2014 incident that resulted in a R350 000 legal settlement, and a 2019 apology to the Human Rights Commission over disparaging comments. She remains a recurring figure in opposition questioning within the Gauteng Provincial Legislature over governance failures in both the health and social development sectors.
