Democracy
Democracy is a system of government in which power is vested in the people, who exercise it directly or through elected representatives. The term derives from the Greek words demos (people) and kratos (power or rule). In modern democracies, citizens typically participate through regular free and fair elections, where they choose representatives to make decisions on their behalf in legislative bodies and executive offices. Democratic systems are characterised by the rule of law, protection of individual rights and freedoms, separation of powers, and accountability of government to the governed. Key principles include political pluralism, freedom of expression and assembly, an independent judiciary, and the protection of minority rights alongside majority rule. Democracy encompasses various models, including parliamentary systems, presidential systems and hybrid arrangements, each with different mechanisms for representation and governance. In the African context, democracy has evolved significantly since the wave of independence movements in the mid-twentieth century, with many countries transitioning from authoritarian rule to multiparty systems. South Africa's transition to democracy in 1994 marked a watershed moment for the continent, establishing constitutional democracy with strong human rights protections. Democratic governance is closely linked to economic development, social stability and the protection of fundamental freedoms, though the quality and depth of democratic institutions vary widely across nations. Challenges to democracy include corruption, weak institutions, inequality and threats to press freedom and civil liberties.
