Deepening Democracy through Access to Information

Afrobarometer

Afrobarometer is an independent pan-African research network that conducts public attitude surveys on democracy, governance, economic conditions and related issues across Africa. The organisation was established in 1999 and is headquartered in Ghana, with regional coordination centres in several African countries. Afrobarometer conducts face-to-face interviews with nationally representative samples of citizens, typically surveying between 1 200 and 2 400 respondents per country. The network covers more than 35 African countries and has completed multiple rounds of surveys since its inception, creating one of the continent's most comprehensive datasets on public opinion. Its surveys measure citizen perceptions and experiences on topics including democracy, governance, elections, service delivery, corruption, identity, tolerance and economic performance. The data is widely used by policymakers, civil society organisations, researchers and media to understand trends in African public opinion. Afrobarometer is funded by a consortium of international donors and operates through partnerships with national research institutions in each participating country. The organisation publishes its findings through policy papers, working papers and open-access datasets. Its work has become a key resource for tracking democratic development, social cohesion and governance challenges across the continent.
