The DA in KwaZulu-Natal is taking urgent legal action against a senior MKP leader following alleged voter intimidation during a weekend election rally in Durban.

The move comes after a video surfaced from the MKP’s election manifesto launch on Sunday, featuring Pastor Khanyisani Mthenjwa, who identifies online as the party's public relations officer.

In the footage, Mthenjwa reportedly threatens to cut off the electricity and water supplies of DA voters if the MKP takes control of the eThekwini municipality.

DA eThekwini mayoral candidate Haniff Hoosen condemned the remarks, labelling them a severe breach of South Africa's democratic framework.

“This threat is a clear violation of the Electoral Act, the Code of Conduct, as well as the non-discrimination provisions of the Constitution,” Hoosen said.

He emphasised that electoral laws strictly prohibit any political party or member from threatening or intimidating voters, noting that such conduct carries severe legal consequences.

Hoosen called on the judiciary and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to intervene.

“This kind of conduct should not be tolerated, and our courts and the IEC must take the strongest possible action against irresponsible and unacceptable conduct by political parties and their members,” he said.

According to the DA, Mthenjwa’s comments offer a “troubling preview” of how the MKP intends to govern if successful in the upcoming elections.

Hoosen drew parallels between the MKP's threats and decades of service delivery failures under the ANC.

“For more than 30 years, communities have suffered without water and electricity because of ANC failures, and now the MKP threatens to worsen the situation,” Hoosen warned.

The DA is leveraging the incident to reinforce its campaign message in the province, urging residents to unite at the ballot box.

“This is why the DA has been warning endlessly that voters must do everything in their power to keep the MK Party out of power in eThekwini and KwaZulu-Natal,” Hoosen said.

The DA's legal team is currently finalising its papers to approach a court on an urgent basis.
