Vhembe
Vhembe is a district municipality in the far northern part of Limpopo province, South Africa. The district borders Zimbabwe to the north and Botswana to the north-west, making it a strategic gateway for cross-border trade and regional integration. Vhembe's economy is anchored by mining, agriculture and tourism, with significant mineral resources including coal, platinum-group metals and gold. The district encompasses the towns of Musina, Thohoyandou and Louis Trichardt, and is home to the Musina Makhado Special Economic Zone, a flagship project intended to drive industrialisation and beneficiation of local minerals. Vhembe's mineral wealth has attracted investment from companies such as MC Mining and participants in the Makhado and Vele projects. The district's proximity to international borders enhances its role as a logistics and export corridor for southern Africa. Agriculture in Vhembe includes subtropical fruit, vegetables and livestock, supported by the region's warm climate and access to water from the Limpopo River basin. The district faces development challenges including infrastructure deficits, unemployment and service delivery pressures, but remains a priority area for government and private sector investment. Vhembe's cultural diversity, natural attractions and economic potential make it a focal point for regional development strategies in South Africa.
