US Department Of Homeland Security
The US Department of Homeland Security is a cabinet-level federal agency of the United States government responsible for public security, counterterrorism, border control, immigration enforcement and disaster response. Established in November 2002 in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the department consolidated 22 federal agencies and programmes under a unified command structure. Its mandate encompasses protecting the American homeland from terrorist threats, securing US borders, enforcing immigration laws, safeguarding cyberspace and critical infrastructure, and coordinating disaster preparedness and emergency response. The department oversees major agencies including US Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Transportation Security Administration, the US Coast Guard, the Secret Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It employs more than 240 000 personnel, making it one of the largest federal departments. The department works closely with international partners on transnational security issues including human trafficking, organised crime and the illicit trade in minerals and other commodities. Its operations extend globally through attachés and liaison officers stationed at US embassies and consulates. The Secretary of Homeland Security, a presidential appointee confirmed by the Senate, leads the department and serves as a member of the President's Cabinet and the National Security Council.
