Tunis
Tunis is the capital and largest city of Tunisia, located on the country's north-eastern Mediterranean coast. It serves as the political, administrative and economic hub of the country, housing government institutions, major banks and corporate headquarters. The city anchors a metropolitan area of more than two-million people, making it the primary commercial centre of Tunisia. Its economy is built on trade, finance, manufacturing and services, supported by the nearby port of La Goulette, which links the city to Mediterranean shipping routes. Tunis is also a centre for Tunisia's growing phosphate, mining and energy-related business activity, with companies and investors in sectors such as critical minerals often basing operations or holding talks in the capital. The city hosts diplomatic missions, regional offices of international organisations and development institutions involved in financing African and North African projects. Tunis has a long history stretching back to ancient Carthage, whose ruins lie on its outskirts, and it later grew under Ottoman and French colonial influence before becoming the capital of independent Tunisia in 1956. Today it combines a historic medina, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a modern business district. Its political significance was underscored during the 2011 uprising that began the Arab Spring. The city remains central to Tunisia's efforts to attract foreign investment in mining, infrastructure and critical minerals development.
