Deepening Democracy through Access to Information

Nicolas Maduro

Nicolás Maduro is a Venezuelan politician who has served as President of Venezuela since 2013. He assumed office following the death of his predecessor, Hugo Chávez, and was initially elected in a special presidential election held in April 2013. Maduro is a member of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela and has continued many of the socialist policies established during the Chávez era. His presidency has been marked by severe economic crisis, hyperinflation, widespread shortages of basic goods and a mass exodus of Venezuelan citizens. The legitimacy of his rule has been contested internationally, particularly following the 2018 presidential election, which many countries and international organisations deemed neither free nor fair. The United States, the European Union and numerous Latin American nations have imposed sanctions on his government and refused to recognise his authority, while he retains support from countries including Russia, China, Iran and, at times, South Africa through forums such as BRICS. Maduro's government has faced accusations of human rights abuses, suppression of political opposition and undermining democratic institutions. Before entering politics, he worked as a bus driver and trade union organiser, later serving as foreign minister under Chávez from 2006 to 2013. His tenure has been characterised by deepening international isolation in the West and closer alignment with non-Western powers, making Venezuela a focal point in debates over sovereignty and international intervention.
