Healthcare
Healthcare is the sector encompassing the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of illness and the preservation of physical and mental wellbeing through services provided by medical, nursing, pharmaceutical and allied health professionals. The industry spans public and private hospitals, clinics, primary-care facilities, diagnostic laboratories, pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors, medical device companies and health insurance providers. In South Africa, healthcare operates as a dual system, with a large public sector serving the majority of the population and a smaller private sector offering advanced services to those with medical insurance. The sector is a significant employer and contributor to GDP across the continent, driven by population growth, urbanisation and the rising burden of communicable and noncommunicable diseases. Key challenges include infrastructure deficits, workforce shortages, unequal access and the need for sustainable financing models. Healthcare is increasingly shaped by digital health technologies, telemedicine and data-driven care models. Regulatory oversight in South Africa involves the Department of Health, the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority and professional councils. The sector attracts substantial investment in facilities, equipment and pharmaceutical research, and is central to national development and pandemic-preparedness strategies.
