Gerrie Nel
Gerrie Nel is a South African advocate and former senior prosecutor who gained international prominence for his role in high-profile criminal cases. He served as a senior deputy director of public prosecutions in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for more than three decades before leaving the public service in 2017. Nel is best known for prosecuting Oscar Pistorius in the 2014 murder trial of Reeva Steenkamp, where his tenacious cross-examination earned him the nickname "the bulldog". He also led prosecutions in other major cases, including corruption charges against former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi. In 2017, Nel joined AfriForum, a civil rights organisation, to head its private prosecutions unit, which pursues criminal cases on behalf of victims and the public interest where the state has declined to prosecute. The unit operates under South African law that permits private individuals or organisations to bring prosecutions with the permission of the National Director of Public Prosecutions. Nel's work at AfriForum has focused on corruption, fraud and other serious crimes, often involving politically connected individuals. His career has been marked by a reputation for meticulous preparation, aggressive courtroom tactics and a commitment to accountability. Nel holds law degrees from the University of the Free State and has become one of South Africa's most recognisable legal figures. His transition from state prosecutor to private advocate reflects broader debates about the capacity and independence of South Africa's criminal justice system.
