David Mabuza
David Mabuza was a South African politician who served as Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa from 2018 to 2023 under President Cyril Ramaphosa, and as Deputy President of the African National Congress (ANC) from December 2017. He previously served as Premier of Mpumalanga province from 2009 to 2018, having earlier held several Mpumalanga provincial executive council portfolios. Born into a rural working-class background, he trained and worked as a schoolteacher and was active in teacher unionisation, chairing the National Education Union of South Africa from 1986 to 1988 before it merged into the South African Democratic Teachers Union, which he also chaired. Mabuza played a pivotal role in securing Ramaphosa's narrow victory in the 2017 ANC leadership contest, helping build the coalition that subsequently pressured then President Jacob Zuma to resign. As Deputy President, he served as Leader of Government Business in Parliament, chaired the Cabinet committees on governance, state capacity and institutional development and on justice, crime prevention and security, led the South African National Aids Council, and coordinated public employment and anti-poverty programmes. He represented South Africa on international platforms and was known among allies as "DD" or "The Cat", a nickname he adopted after surviving an alleged 2015 poisoning that required specialised medical treatment in Moscow. His career was also marked by denied allegations of irregular tenders linked to a 2010 World Cup stadium and links to political killings in Mpumalanga. Mabuza died in hospital on July 3, 2025, at the age of 64, following a short illness, and was honoured with a Special Official Category 2 State Funeral.
