Cuba
Cuba is an island nation in the Caribbean, located south of Florida and east of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. The capital and largest city is Havana. Cuba has a population of about 11-million and operates a centrally planned economy under a single-party socialist government. The country possesses significant mineral resources, including nickel, cobalt, iron ore and copper, with nickel and cobalt production forming a key component of export earnings. Cuba is one of the world's leading producers of nickel, with major deposits in the eastern provinces. The national currency is the Cuban peso, though the economy has historically been affected by dual-currency arrangements and foreign-exchange controls. Since the 1959 revolution, Cuba has faced long-standing economic sanctions imposed by the United States, which have restricted trade, investment and financial transactions. These sanctions have shaped Cuba's economic development and its reliance on partnerships with non-US investors, particularly in the mining and energy sectors. Cuba is a member of the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement but is not part of major Western-led economic blocs. The country's economy depends heavily on tourism, remittances, medical services exports and mineral production.
