Deepening Democracy through Access to Information

Brazzaville

Brazzaville is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Congo, situated on the northern bank of the Congo River. The city sits directly across the river from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, making the two capitals among the closest in the world. Brazzaville serves as the political and administrative centre of Congo-Brazzaville, housing the national government, parliament and presidential offices. The city is also the country's main economic hub, with industries including manufacturing, brewing, textiles and construction materials. Its port facilities on the Congo River support regional trade and transport. Brazzaville is the capital of the Brazzaville department and the larger Pool region. The city has grown significantly since independence in 1960, with a population now exceeding one-million residents. Infrastructure development has been uneven, with wealth concentrated in certain districts while poverty persists in outlying areas. Brazzaville was founded as a French colonial outpost in 1880 and served as the capital of French Equatorial Africa from 1910 to 1958, giving it enduring political and cultural significance in Central Africa.
