As has been Treasury's custom over the years, the 2010 Taxation Laws Amendment Bill (Bill), tabled in Parliament on 25 August 2010, seeks to balance the closing of various perceived tax loopholes with the provision of tax relief. However, the continuous amendment to the Income Tax Act, 58 of 1962 (Act) results in the Act becoming more and more intricate, despite recent pronouncements by the Minister of Finance to the contrary. Hence it is now more important than ever for South African taxpayers to remain abreast of the changes. This brief examines some of the more important domestic tax changes.

Written by: Chemus Taljaard and Henry Isaacs, Directors, Leon Rood, Senior Associate and Daleen Malan, Associate at Werksmans Attorneys.
