- Safe mine design: an anachronism?0.59 MB
South Africa’s ageing mines are posing a growing corporate governance dilemma for the boards and chief executives of mining companies. Designed and constructed in another era, they may not meet today’s health and safety standards.
According to the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), every mine must be designed, equipped and constructed in a safe manner. Equipment safety is seldom fundamentally problematic since mining equipment is used in daily operations and is usually well maintained and regularly replaced or upgraded. Much more challenging is the issue of safe mine design and construction, especially in light of the country’s deep mining roots.
