Adams & Adams – now the largest intellectual property practice in Africa and in the southern hemisphere - is consolidating its positioning on the African continent with the opening of offices in Tanzania and Burundi. These offices are the third and fourth African offices in the Adams & Adams organisation. This development follows just weeks after the firm’s merger of the intellectual property practice of Bowman Gilfillan into its own.

“For nearly 50 years, the firm has built up close relationships with associates throughout the world and particularly on the African continent,” says Dario Tanziani, Chairman of Adams & Adams.

Tanziani says that the increased interest in emerging market economies including Africa has brought with it an increase in the demand for IP protection in Africa. The best way to assist clients with their IP needs in Africa is for the firm to have its own offices in selected countries on the continent.

To this end the firm has, for some years now, operated successful offices in Mozambique (ARIPO) and Angola.

“We are excited that the intellectual property practice of Mkono & Co, a leading law firm in the region, is now the Tanzanian and Burundi IP office of Adams & Adams. The agreement formalises the long-standing relationship between our firms, and also means that Adams & Adams will use Mkono & Co on an exclusive basis for the provision of intellectual property legal services in Tanzania (including Zanzibar) and Burundi.

“It means our clients enjoy a seamless service both in South Africa and in an ever-expanding presence through us in Africa,” says Tanziani.

The Honourable Nimrod E Mkono, Managing Partner of Mkono & Co, says of the office: “Our firm’s exclusive arrangement with A&A in the provision of intellectual property legal services in Tanzania, Zanzibar and Burundi will now give Mkono & Co the upper hand in the fiercely competitive environment and in serving the rapidly changing needs of clients with cross-border practices."
