About the Committee:

The Committee is a multi-party structure with 29 members from five parties. The Committee is divided into five subcommittees: Science and Technology; Arts; Culture; Language; RDP

The Portfolio Committee's responsibilities:

Being in constant consultation with constituencies; formulating policy and facilitating access to government. It is involved in projects and events that effect the transformation processes.
In consultation with the constituency, passing legislation.
To monitor Executive, the Department and other related structures in their performance of policy, implementation and funding.

Objectives of the Committee:

To shift the nation towards a consciousness that says each person contributes to Science and Technology and Science and Technology touches the lives of everybody everyday, so that the population, understanding S&T as a tool for change, transforms the country and nation to be livable and with quality of life for all.

To discover and ensure that the dynamics of culture and language inform life, and that life informs both culture and language; and that the arts express that life. And to nurture the diversity of South African culture.

The Portfolio Committee would like to review progress in November 1998 of our strategic objectives to see how we have fared.
