SUB-COMMITTEE -LANGUAGE


With the recognition of language as a basic right. In the context of South Africa, language can be viewed as a tool which will enable to build and develop multi-lingualism, multi-culturalism and a sociolinguistic African nation.


OBJECTIVES:

Is to promote participation by all in nation building
Develop basic needs infrastructure
Promote the deepening of democracy
Promote integration and sustainability

The subcommittee is charged with the following responsibilities

To make recommendations to the Portfolio Committee on:

To initiate new legislation or an amendment of existing legislation dealing with language issues.

To monitor the department's implementation at both policy and legislation and then alert the portfolio committee about any pertinent issue. This is done by arranging the meetings/ briefings and through the submission of a report by the department.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

Adoption of the Pan South African Language Board Act in 1995.
The inauguration of the (PANSALB) Pan South African Language Board in April 1996.

FUTURE GOALS FOR 1997:

The subcommittee is presently dealing with the amendment of the PANSALB Act (59011995). The National Lexicography unit Bill has to be subsumed on to the PANSALB Act.
The Subcommittee further intends to prepare a summary of the LANGTAG report as a move towards the drafting of a national language policy.
