As the liberal order faces increasing challenges, and geo-political centres of power shift, regional human rights mechanisms are essential for safeguarding gender equality, social inclusion and sustainable peace and security.

Regional organisations and their human rights mechanisms are important tools in response to this global polycrisis. However, these mechanisms are under strain and face targeted attacks by anti-gender and anti-democratic actors.

Governments committed to feminist foreign policy and gender equality have a unique responsibility and opportunity to defend, strengthen and improve regional human rights mechanisms. This briefing paper offers recommendations on how to do so financially, diplomatically and politically, complementing governments’ efforts to protect multilateralism and human rights at the global level.
