This past month, the Western Cape Provincial Parliament has been at the forefront of setting the agenda on moving urgently on the country’s energy crisis.
During his State of the Province Address on 16 February, Premier Alan Winde, committed his Government and the Provincial Energy Council to accounting to the Provincial Parliament’s Ad-hoc Committee on the impact of load shedding in the Western Cape province. Last month, the DA submitted a motion for the creation of an Ad-hoc Committee following the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his State of the Nation Address of a National State of Disaster on the energy crisis.
Once constituted, the Committee will perform greater oversight of national and provincial government institutions and expenditure; evaluate the implementation of State of Disaster regulations on the Western Cape; and allow for greater representation and inputs of Western Cape communities, NGOs and businesses.
On Thursday, the Legislature will participate in a DA-sponsored debate on the national energy crisis and the impact it has on the Western Cape province. We trust that this engagement will be fruitful and bring forward valuable solutions and inputs to ensure that the Western Cape become an energy-resilient province.
The DA commends the proactivity of the Western Legislature in putting the matter of the energy crisis front and centre and in ensuring dialogue, oversight and transparency on the biggest crisis facing our country.
Issued by Wendy Kaizer-Philander MPP - DA Chief Whip in Western Cape Provincial Parliament
