The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has officially cemented its status as Africa's premier institution for societal and sustainable impact.
According to the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings released on Wednesday, UJ is the leading university in both South Africa and the African continent.
Ranking 39th globally, UJ has broken into the world's top 40 institutions for sustainability. The university claims the top spot in South Africa for eight of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), proving that academic excellence and community development can go hand in hand.
This latest accolade marks a historic month of international recognition for the institution.
UJ entered the global Top 300 of the QS World University Rankings for the first time, rising 16 places to 292nd globally and becoming the second-highest ranked university in South Africa and on the African continent.
The university also climbed 38 places in the US News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings to a record-high 281st position globally. Together, these achievements reflect the growing international recognition of UJ's excellence, relevance and impact.
The university secured 39th place globally on the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings, leading the African continent in driving measurable human and environmental progress.
The THE Sustainability Impact Ratings (formerly the THE Impact Rankings) evaluate how universities contribute to the UN's SDGs through research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.
This year, the agency evaluated 1 646 universities across 116 countries, with UJ delivering an extraordinary performance, placing in the global top 100 for nine individual SDGs, including two top 20 global rankings.
The university was ranked seventh in the world for SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and 11th globally for SDG 1: No Poverty, while retaining the number one position in both South Africa and Africa for these goals.
The University also secured top 100 global positions for SDG 5: Gender Equality (26th), SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities (34th), SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy (40th), SDG 4: Quality Education (45th), SDG 2: Zero Hunger (48th), SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production (56th) and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (74th). Several of these rankings recorded significant year-on-year improvements, reflecting UJ's expanding contribution to sustainable development.
UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, emphasises that these numbers reflect a deeply ingrained institutional ethos rather than a simple desire for accolades.
"Retaining our position as the leading university in South Africa and Africa in the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings is not simply about achieving another ranking milestone," Mpedi states.
"It is about demonstrating that the work we do every day is making a real difference in the lives of people and communities." Mpedi highlighted that the university’s Strategic Plan 2035 consciously places innovation, inclusive development, and societal impact at the core of its operational DNA.
"We do not aspire to be the best university in the world. We aspire to be the best university for the world," Mpedi explains. "For us, success is measured not only by academic excellence, but by the positive impact we create through our teaching, research, innovation, and partnerships."
While celebrating this monumental wave of international recognition, UJ leadership remains focused on the future. Mpedi credits the milestone to the collective drive of the university's staff, students, researchers, alumni, and global partners.
As South Africa and the broader continent navigate complex economic and environmental landscapes, UJ’s performance serves as a blueprint for how higher education institutions can leverage research and teaching to create tangible, lasting value for society.
