Following the shocking revelation that the City of Tshwane failed to chlorinate drinking water at the Bronkhorstspruit treatment plant for several weeks, the DA demands urgent confirmation that the same failure has not occurred at other water treatment plants across the City.

Information sent to the DA alleges that chlorine is absent at numerous water treatment plants, not just Bronkhorstspruit. As yet, we have not received confirmation of this, but the City must communicate on this issue urgently.

The City must confirm whether:

  • All its other treatment plants have adequate supplies of chlorine;
  • All water has been properly treated, and;
  • If any other communities may have been exposed to unsafe drinking water.

The public deserves to know whether this crisis is confined to Bronkhorstspruit or whether it points to a wider breakdown in the management of Tshwane’s water infrastructure, under Moya.

I call on Mayor Nasiphi Moya to issue an immediate public statement addressing these questions, supported by verifiable records of chlorine supplies and water quality tests at every treatment plant. After what happened in Bronkhorstspruit, residents cannot simply be expected to take the City’s word that their drinking water is safe.

Issued by DA Tshwane mayoral candidate Ald Cilliers Brink
