The City of Tshwane recorded no acts of violence as citizens participated in peaceful marches and gatherings to highlight concerns about immigration on Tuesday, 30 June 2026.
We thank citizens who adhered to the prescripts of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, which provides citizens with the right to peaceful demonstration.
The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) approved a march that took place in the Pretoria CBD. This march was overseen by a strong presence of law enforcement personnel from the TMPD and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The City’s security cluster responded to smaller gatherings that took place in Mamelodi, Bronkhorstspruit, Soshanguve, Nellmapius, Olievenhoutbosch, Stinkwater, Ga-Rankuwa and Mabopane. While the first wave of planned demonstrations has ended, the City’s security cluster will remain on high alert.
Tshwane has been at the forefront to respond to citizens’ growing concerns about illegal immigration. In the past 18 months, we have led dozens of by-law enforcement operations that have successfully apprehended undocumented immigrants.
We are cognisant of the economic and service delivery pressures felt by residents who are forced to share resources in a rapidly growing population. The peaceful demonstrations ensured that the essence of the grievances were heard by the government. Tshwane remains committed to continue its by-law enforcement mandate.
Press Statement by: Dr Nasiphi Moya - Executive Mayor of Tshwane
