Gauteng residents should know in July what the new, revised toll fees will be for the 185 km of road refurbished and expanded under the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP).
The tariff framework for the first phase of the GFIP is currently the subject of a government review, following a public outcry over the toll fees as proposed in February.
The original fee structure, which was to be introduced on June 23, would have charged motorists 66 c/km, without discounts.
“We expect to have a pronouncement on what the toll fees will be in around a month,” says Department of Transport (DoT) spokesperson Logan Maistry.
The steering committee charged with revisiting the toll fee structure, through extensive consultation with a variety of interested parties, has not yet handed its report to Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele, who will study the report and then make an announcement on a new fee structure.
The minister indicated in his budget speech last week that there will be another round of consultation before any announcement is made.
