The DA in Lepelle-Nkumpi is saddened by the death of Mr Petrus Aphane who passed away on the D3602 in Ga-Molapo last night.

Mr. Aphane was hit by a bus exactly 30 days after the tragic death of a Thapelo Sylvester Mmako, who was hit by a speeding car on the 10th of April 2023 in Ga-Molapo.

On 21 April 2023, the DA wrote to the Acting Manager for Community Services, Masopo Mametja, outlining the urgent need for speed humps and other road safety features on D3602.

To date, there was no response to our request or any action taken, which is a clear indication that the Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality does not care about the lives of the residents of Ga-Molapo and the D3602 road users.

The D3602 remains a death trap for both pedestrians and motorists that use the 20.7-kilometre road between Mamogashwa-Sekgophokgophong-Gedroogte-Ga-Molapo.

The lack of traffic calming  measures on the D3602 continues to give speedsters and negligent drivers free reign.

We call upon Lepelle Nkumpi Local Municipality to ensure that traffic calming devices are installed and to increase visibility of traffic law enforcement officials urgently to avoid another senseless death.

The DA will visit the Aphane family during the week to convey our condolences.
