The leadership of the South African National Civic Organization Youth Congress in KZN is in conversation with the Provincial Secretary of COSATU Comrade Edwin Mkhize.

We have taken a decision to join their peaceful march against rising fuel prices planned for Friday, 17 June 2022. We are calling upon all young dwellers to join this march in their numbers.

We are in possession of unaudited data released by the Central Energy Fund. The report shows an under recovery petrol that would translate into an increase of around R2 a litre at the beginning of July. According to the report, diesel will increase by around R1, 30 a litre.

It is horrifying that whilst  our mothers, fathers, uncles and aunts are paying R23, 42 for unleaded petrol here in KZN, there is a further increase forecast for the end of the month.

It is the young dwellers, who should be accessing school, tertiary education and those that are unemployed  - that will face the negative consequences of the rising fuel prices.

Our parents, who are struggling - with no pay increase and some who are treated as cheap labour – deserve our special attention.

It is for these reasons that we support the call by COSATU for government to honour its wage agreement with unions in the public sector.

Equally, the private sector must also increase salaries of our hard working parents who do not even enjoy their wages which are swallowed by petrol and transport money.

As young dwellers, we will use our energy to force government to implement measures to mitigate fuel prices crisis. This fuel price increase will create more unemployment with many people forced to live in the conditions of squalor for many years to come.

Issued by the South African National Civic Organization Youth Congress KZN  Coordinator, Thulani Gamede
