The Speaker of Council, Councillor Vasco Da Gama will be hosting the 61st Johannesburg Regiment’s military parade on Saturday 5 March 2022 in Johannesburg. It will take place at the Metro Centre piazza at 10am together with the JMPD and EMS as a joint parade in commemoration of the brave men and woman that have died in the line of duty.

As the host of the host of the event, Speaker Da Gama will lay the first wreath on behalf of councillors that have passed away. The Executive Mayor will also lay one on behalf of all citizens and employees of the City and the Chiefs of JMPD and EMS will lay one on behalf of uniformed personnel.

This being a remembrance parade, it includes the playing of Last Post, two minutes silence and reveille as well as a wreath laying ceremony led by Parade Commander Captain S Tlisane and Parade Sergeant Major, S/Sgt D.V Thela. The Johannesburg Regiment has participated in many operations and exercises throughout the years and is currently active in Africa as part of peace keeping, anti-poaching and later this month, some members will be deployed to the Northern Cape for border control duties.

The Regiment has an active association which supports military veterans and has an active interaction with and other veterans organizations. The current officer commanding is Lt. Col. J.N. Nkosi and the Regimental Sergeant Major is Master Warrant B C Masombuka.

The Johannesburg Regiment has been in existence since 1 July 1951. At the time it was an artillery unit known as 8 Field Regiment. Colonel J.S.K. Brink was the regiment’s first commanding officer. In February 1960, 8 Field Regiment disbanded and officially became the Johannesburg Regiment and remustered to an infantry regiment.

In September 1960, the Johannesburg City Council gave permission to the unit to use the Johannesburg City Coat of Arms as the regimental badge. On the 26th February 1966 the Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Alec Jaffe presented the regiment with their colours at a parade held at the show grounds in Milner Park. Six years later the honour of Freedom of Entrance to the City of Johannesburg was bestowed on the Regiment.
