This week, President Cyril Ramaphosa has implemented decisive measures in an attempt to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The country’s citizens get ready for a nationwide lockdown for a period of 21-days, during which all South Africans will have to stay at home. Many parents are concerned about how their children’s education will be affected by the extended closure of schools.
The South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) has a solution, where every child in South Africa can benefit from the Khan Academy - a non-profit educational organization, created by Salman Khan in 2008, with the purpose of developing a set of online tools that help educate students.
SAICE moved into the on-line learning arena through the Khan Academy. Speaking on behalf of SAICE, Brian Downie says the Academy produces short lessons in the form of videos. Its website also includes supplementary practice exercises and materials for educators. Now, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, amongst many others, the organisation’s goal is to provide a “free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere”. In actual fact, millions of students from all over the world, each with their own unique story, learn at their own pace on the Khan Academy every single day.
