The Ad Hoc Committee on the Funding of Political Parties has elected Mr Vincent Smith as Chairperson. The Committee was established by a resolution of the National Assembly (NA) on 6 June 2017, in terms of the NA Rule 253 (1) (a).

The Committee has begun its work by inviting members of the public to make submissions on how political party funding could be strengthened.

Mr Smith said: “The public is given until the 21 July 2017 to make written submissions, after which the Committee will arrange for interested parties to make oral presentations.”

The Committee’s terms of reference are to enquire into and make recommendations on funding of political parties represented in national and provincial legislatures with a view to introducing amendments to the legislation, if necessary.

The Committee will make recommendations on the regulation of private funding as well as the model of public and private funding for political parties.

The Committee consists of 11 members, six of which will come from the African National Congress, two from the Democratic Alliance, one from the Economic Freedom Fighters and another two from the remainder of the parties represented in the NA.

The Committee will exercise those powers in Rule 167 that may assist in carrying out its task, and will report back to the NA no later than 30 November 2017.
