The Joint Standing Committee on the Financial Management of Parliament has concurred that the funding model of Parliament need urgent review.

The Committee was briefed last night about the budget of Parliament for the 2018/19 financial years, in which the Institution said it will be underfunded by R1, 1 billion.

"Although we note the underfunding, we urge the administration managers not to compromise the working of Committees and Parliament’s Constitutional obligations,” said Mr Vincent Smith, Chairperson of the Committee.

The Committee also dealt with the Institution’s fourth quarter performance and expenditure report. It was agreed that the administration should go and rework it and present in August.

“We are concerned that the current format which the information is presented makes oversight by the Committee ineffective,” said Mr Vincent Smith, Chairperson of the Committee.

The Committee will convene a series of meetings in the next quarter to look into the following areas that include, human resources issues and report back as well as review on the status of the internal policies of Parliament.
