The Portfolio Committee on Commutations has noted with keen interest the story in today’s Business Day under the headline; “Rubben Mohlaloga ‘on the way out’ as Icasa chairman after fraud conviction”.

The Chairperson of the Committee, Mr Humphrey Maxegwana, is in agreement with the story and corroborates the Minister of Communications, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, as quoted, saying only Parliament can institute the process to remove Mr Mohlaloga as a member and chairperson of the Council, in terms of the Icasa Act.

The Committee has since received a referral on the matter from the Speaker’s Office and has accordingly sought legal opinion. It will deliberate on the matter and report back to the National Assembly.

“The Act is clear on what constitutes disqualification to persons serving on the Icasa Council and accordingly, once the legal opinion has been received, the Committee will move swiftly to bring the matter to finality,” said Mr Maxegwana.
