I thank the University community for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Chancellor for two four-year terms in office since 2009. This role features amongst those which are the hallmark of my career.

I enjoyed the warmth, support and cooperation of the University community and staff and I trust such will be similarly experienced by the new Chancellor Chief Justice Mogoeng Moegeng.

The graduation ceremonies were the highlights of my tenure wherein the parents, staff and community joined the students as they celebrated the fruits of their labour and were launched into society armed with the variety of the skills and learnings they acquired.

The last few years of student protests added a huge strain to all Institutions of higher learning,  and Chancellors found that at the peak of the distress the expectations of the roles they played extended beyond the roles defined in the University statutes.  It called for immense commitment and in all difficult circumstances, they (Chancellors) continued to play their role as the symbols of dignity of the respective academic institutions they served in.

I also congratulate the incoming Chancellor Chief Justice Mogoeng. His stature and experience will certainly add tremendous value to the institution. I congratulate the University on an excellent choice. I wish him and the University well in the future.

Issued by Zweli Mkhize
