The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the long-overdue return of South African soldiers deployed to the Democratic Republic of the Congo as part the SADC Mission. These brave men and women served with courage under dangerous and debilitating conditions. Their safe return is a moment of national pride.

However, the Department of Defence’s planned red carpet homecoming, complete with fanfare and flag-waving, is a bitter irony. The media parade has been far better coordinated than the mission itself, including the chaotic withdrawal operation.

Since the deadly M23 rebel attack on 27 January 2025, which claimed 14 South African lives and left many more maimed, injured or traumatised, our troops have been effectively confined to base. Communication from Defence Command has been minimal. Promises that all forces would be withdrawn by 31 May were broken due to delays, unpaid transport contractors, and an overall collapse in logistical planning.

The most meaningful tribute to these soldiers is not a media event, it is a solemn national commitment: never again will South African troops be deployed into harm’s way without the tools, preparation, and leadership they need to succeed.

The DA reiterates its call for a full parliamentary inquiry into the SAMIDRC deployment – including the circumstances of the January casualties, the failed withdrawal logistics, and the unacceptable silence towards families and troops alike.

Our men and women in uniform deserve more than ceremonies. They deserve competent, accountable leadership.
