Young South Africans must register to vote so they can have a say in who governs municipalities, President Jacob Zuma said on Friday.

He urged all eligible citizens to go to their voting stations on Saturday or Sunday between 08:00 and 17:00 and make sure their details were on the voters' roll.

It was an important part of their duties as citizens of a democratic country, he said in a statement.

He would register at the Ntolwane Primary School voting station in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal.

Home affairs department offices would be open on both days so people could collect their ID books and smart cards.

The Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said on Thursday that at least 9-million South Africans who were eligible to vote were not registered.

The IEC hoped that at least 1-million of them would register over the weekend, CEO Mosotho Moepya said.

Almost one in three unregistered voters lived in Gauteng.
