After more than a year of an intensive candidate selection process, the Democratic Alliance can confirm that we have finalised our team of ward and proportional nominations ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.
The DA follows a rigorous candidate selection process to ensure that our councillors meet the high standards expected of those entrusted with serving residents.
The process involves training, ongoing performance assessment, assignments, an invigilated exam and an audited interview before a Selection Panel.
We have taken great care to use every available measure to find the best possible candidates to represent the Democratic Alliance as ward and proportional councillors in every ward in the City of Cape Town to ensure residents continue benefitting from DA delivery.
Some incumbent councillors are retiring after years of service and we are grateful for their commitment and sacrifice over the many years they have served their communities.
Some long-serving ward councillors are also nominated to serve on the proportional list of the party and will be supporting and coaching new candidate ward councillors who are stepping up to contest the November elections for the DA.
As the DA values commit us to an open opportunity society, this process - the competitive screening, assessment and selection processes have in some cases selected new candidates in favour of incumbent ward councillors as our candidates.
As principled democrats, DA members and public representatives are all committed to respecting these transparent selection procedures and will be aware of the scores they achieved during ongoing assessments over the past four years and during the exam.
We thank these outgoing councillors for their service and contribution to their communities and the DA.
Refreshing our teams is part of ensuring that the DA continues to put residents first and fields the best available candidates to represent the communities. Soon, we will introduce the new ward candidates who will be engaging you about their vision and plans for their wards.
Electing capable DA councillors will ensure that the DA in Cape Town continues working for all and achieves the highest service levels in South Africa - with the highest level of access to basic services, the largest number of houses built of any metro, four consecutive reductions in serious violent crime following the roll-out of the LEAP and Neighbourhood Safety Officers, the highest number of jobs created by any municipality and the lowest levels of unemployment, and the largest investment in infrastructure to ensure that Cape Town remains a well-functioning and successful city.
On 4 November, voters will have the opportunity to choose a DA team committed to getting the job done. We have the proven record and capable skills. With our new team, we are ready to take DA-led service delivery to new heights.
When the DA wins, Cape Town wins!
Issued by DA Cape Town Metro Chairperson JP Smith
